The military-historical museum of fortifications “Karhumaki Castle” invites you to an excursion into the world of Finnish defense structures in the Medvezhyegorsk district. This is a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the history of our town during the occupation by Finnish troops in 1941-1944. The Karhumaki Castle Defense Node is a unique complex of military structures that are perfectly integrated into the local landscape.
In the area of Medvezhyegorsk a circular defense was created by the enemy in a short time. There are powerful firing points on the heights, a large barracks with many rooms was created in the rock itself. You can also see many ground passages connecting the long-term firing points with each other. The head of the Private Institution “The military-historical museum of fortifications” is Andrei Belous.
Having won the competition of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives in 2022 and received a grant, Andrei and his team are now creating an open-air museum and educational space – “Karhumaki Castle”. They have already made a mobile museum exposition, as well as a digital storage of exhibits and online excursions to the fortifications, which makes it possible to expand the circle of people interested in studying the history of Karelia during the Great Patriotic War.
Andrei is currently reconstructing the “Karhumaki Castle”, which is a circular defense system covering a group of heights to the west of Medvezhyegorsk. There are plans to open a café, viewing platforms, a health trail, and lighting.
